Festival
Festival-goers coming to this year’s Glastonbury Festival are being urged to think green before they arrive. “Travel light, don’t bring unnecessary clutter and leave the site as you found it” is the watchword for 2008. The overall message is “Love the farm – leave no trace”.
In particular, festival-goers are being encouraged to take their camping equipment, sleeping bags and tents home with them, rather than abandoning them on the site.
A new partnership between Glastonbury Festival and leading social enterprise ECT Recycling should meanwhile ensure that good use is made of any camping equipment left behind after the event. All abandoned equipment, textiles and

Shangri-La is the all new late night entertainment area that replaces Lost Vagueness at Glastonbury this year. We have just recieved some details on what entertainment will be on offer in this area and it sounds exciting to say the least. Shangri-La will be like a festival within a festival with lots of weird and wonderful things happening. You could stumble into the Slumbarave, or dip your toe in the Jacuzzi Lounge, lose yourself in Shackney, Club Dada and Bassline Circus. Hoe down at the Barn Stage or go for a nice pint of cider in the proper Pub.

Registration for this year's Glastonbury Festival closed at midnight on March 14th. Anyone hoping to come to Glastonbury 2008 must have registered by this time. Michael Eavis developed the registration system in 2007 as a measure to stop the touting of Festival tickets. By preventing touting, the Festival is able to make sure tickets aren't sold at inflated prices, and that all the profits can be passed on to the Festival's associated charities. Tickets will go on sale at 9am on sunday 6th april.
Biodegradable tent pegs to be handed out this year
The organisers of Glastonbury Festival will hand out 100, 000 biodegradable tent pegs this year. This measure is being carried out as a response to the thousands of metal tent pegs that are left littered around the site every year that can prove fatal to the Worthy Farm cows. The tent pegs will be made from natural material derived from wheat and potatoes. The biodegradable tent pegs are completely reusable and Festival goers will be encouraged to take them home with the rest of their camping equipment. However, any biodegradable tent pegs which are left in the ground will be broken down by microbes in the soil, much like any organic matter.
Glastonbury New Talent 2008 finalists have been announced
A shortlist of 12 bands has been put together from the thousands of entrants that the festival organisers have recieved for the 2008 New Talent Competition.
The 12 finalists are The 21 Demands, 28 Costumes, Andy Hickie & The Merry Maidens, Boys In A Band, Charlene Soraia, The Golden Silvers, Myth Of Unity, Revere, Rod Thomas, Swimming, The Franks and Young Runaways.
All of the acts will perform a 20-minute set at a live final. They will be judged by a panel which includes Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Glastonbury's Emily Eavis and Q editor Paul Rees. The ultimate winner will then play either the Other stage or the Pyramid stage at this year's Festival.
New late night area announced, 'Shangri-La'
Festival organisers have announced that there will be a new late night entertainment area with 12 stages, spread across 40 acres, called Shangri-La. It will replace the old late night entertainment area, Lost Vagueness. Shangri-La will have many surprise attractions, its own traditional village green and will be licenced until 6am over both the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival.
"This is a new venture, on a par with the launch of the Park last year, and I'm really excited about it," says Festival organiser Michael Eavis.
Fatboy Slim, Kate Nash and Amy Winehouse set to play
Singer/songwriter Kate Nash will open this year's Glastonbury Festival. She will be the first artist to perform on the Pyramid Stage on Friday 27th June. Amy Winehouse has also been confirmed to play this year in a video interview with Glastonbury organiser, Michael Eavis, on the BBC website. This week Fatboy Slim self-confirmed a friday set at Glastonbury 2008 at the press conference for the Wireless Festival, which he will be headlining this year.
Jay-Z, Kings of Leon and The Verve confirmed to headline Glastonbury 2008.
US Rapping legend, Jay-Z, has been confirmed to headline this summer's Glastonbury Festival. Speaking to BBC Somerset, the festival's organiser, Michael Eavis said he wanted to "break with tradition this time and put on something totally different." He added, "He [Jay-Z] will appeal to the young people and under 25's for sure, so that's a big pull for them. It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis."
The reformed band The Verve will take the Sunday slot, their appearance as a headline act is in part due to their classic Glastonbury status.
Kings Of Leon will be headlining on the Friday night on the pyramid stage. The band first performed at Glastonbury in 2003 in the New Bands Tent.
We're sure that Open Your Mind readers will be happy about Glastonbury having young people at mind when booking their headline slots.
Glastonbury launches 'Love the farm, Leave no Trace' Campaign.
Once you have registered for the festival the organisers have a message they would like to get across to you. They want people to plan carefully when starting to organise things for the festival. Last year 20,000 tents, tonnes of camping gear, wet clothes, muddy wellies, thousands of gazebos, an army of fold up chairs, disposable BBQ’s and umbrellas alongside many other objects were dumped at Worthy Farm. This year they want festival-goers to work with them to love the farm and leave no trace. Travel light, bring what you’re willing to carry home. When buying your tent and camping gear, don’t buy the cheapest, get something you’ll want to keep. When it’s time to go, pack up your stuff and take it away. Help
